7 Habits of Highly Effective Bloggers - Habit 1 - Be Proactive

Blogging seems pretty simple if you follow these rules:
1) Link to good stuff.
2) Write appropriate commentary.
3) Write emails in conjunction with your blogging.

But are we being effective bloggers. Leading mindshare bloggers like Doc and Instapundit say that fun is a key component of blogging for them. But I wonder if they are having fun because they are so effective.

In the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Covey talks about the need for a paradigm shift in the way we look at the world. And perhaps we can use the 7 habits paradigm shift to enhance another paradigm shift - blogging.

Habit One - Be Proactive
Covey says that this habit involves taking charge and responsibility for you life. For Bloggers, this means taking charge of your blogging. Blogging should be an asset in your life. If it is not, you have the ability to change that. If you can't make blogging a positive experience, you can quit or take a break. But first you might want to try to take control of your blogging.

A first step in taking control of your blogging is lessening your mental dependence on incoming links. Although there are few greater rushes than an Instalanche from Slashdot, Glenn, Dave or some other big blogger, it is something out of your control. And Instalanches are like many other intense experiential pleasures - they are great while you have them, but in a very short while you need another fix. The pleasure of giving is much more lasting. So try focusing on your outward links it is something that you can control and it is no coincidence that the many of the most effective bloggers are very outward-link oriented.
