A Weblog Is...

Many bloggers are very concerned about the definition of a weblogs and good weblogs:

Dave Winer: What Makes a Weblog a Weblog: A weblog is a hierarchy of text, images, media objects and data, arranged chronologically, that can be viewed in an HTML browser. A weblog post has three basic attributes: title, link and description.
Aren't most blogs text only? Is the title just an identifying attribute? And if so, does it need to be unique?

Glenn Reynolds: The Good, The Bad, and the Blogly: The key to good blogging is simple: have something interesting to say, and say it well.
By good blogging, do you mean popular blogging? Interesting to whom? If you can't say it well, should you not blog or should you just resolve yourself to being a bad blogger?

David Weinberger: Always On Debate: It's a web site where an individual can talk about what matters to her/him, generally in relatively short bursts, generally every day, and with lots of links.
Does anybody ever talk about something that doesn't matter to him/her to some extent? Are short bursts every day essential or just the norm? How many links are "lots of links"?

Sam Ruby: Anatomy of a Well Formed Log Entry: Authentic Voice of a Person. Reverse Chronological Order. On the web. A well formed log entry would contain at a minimum an author, a creationDate, and a permaLink. And, of course, content.
Do you really think you can reveal to me your authentic self? Do you really know who you are? My permaLinks often don't work due to bugs in Blogger, does that turn my blog entries into unblog-entries?

Mark Pilgrim: The W's of Weblogging: Permalinks, Dates, Author, MIME Type
Are MIME Types so important?

Shelley Powers: Weblogging Data Model: Hello Mr. Christian: Author, Date, Unique Location, Content (Category).
If a unique location is not necessarily a permalink, why is it essential? Does the unique location need to be permanent for a certain amount of time.

When all is said and done, I think Jeff Ward said it best. A weblog is either:
Show and Tell: Gee, look at what I found!
Soapbox: To stand on and pronounce your opinion.
Footstool: A comfortable place to express my thoughts knowing that others might read and respond to it.
